Music
If there is one record, one artist that had
the most impact on your personal career as a DJ/producer, how would
that be and how could you describe this influence?
Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” produced by Giorgio
Moroder. The mixture of club sound, electronica and song writing is
absolutely stunning and has inspired me throughout my musical career
and foremost in my productions. It still sounds very contemporary
and as fresh as it used to be back in 1982.
When producing a track – or when DJing
– do you rather produce/DJ for yourself or do you have a certain
person/crowd in mind?
Actually it is both I think. Of course I work foremost for myself
because it just gives me great satisfaction. However I always have
a specific audience in mind. I usually use the crowd in clubs to test
the different ways in which my sound affects the dancefloor. I think
DJing is very important for me and you learn a lot about music and
how it moves people in clubs. That knowledge is a very essential aspect
of my productions.
What was the best feedback you got on a track? |
|
Well, The Roxy Music remix I recently
produced had a very large impact and I received fantastic feedback
from all around the globe. Even Brian Ferry himself and his son called
and wanted to let me know how happy they were with the mix. As
a DJ do you act more or react?
I always aspire to establish my own mood when I play in clubs. I think
this is a very important aspect of DJing. Everyone can just play the
tunes that you can buy at each and any store. But this would make
everything far too easy. I want people to go home after nights were
I play and really realize I was playing and not just any club DJ.
I don’t want to be seen as an exchangeable variable but as someone
who brings a very distinct and selected sound and hence the mood that
comes with it. |

Collectors
Series pt.2
The title of this album suggests that the songs
are collectors items?
My Mix CD simply depicts a selection of rare dance music. Most of
the songs have been in my box throughout the past 15 years, hence
I can be seen as the collector. The idea was to put together a tracklist
of tunes that cannot be found at regular stores. I think that this
kind of musical style is not an everyday affair, i.e. you can’t
just go to a bar or a club and listen to such music. It is a blend
of early Electronica, Cosmic and House music. I think the most important
thing is that all songs on “Danse, Gravite Zero” are timeless
and not as short-lived as most of contemporary music.
We found out quite a bit about yourself until
now. Could you introduce to us your partner Sal P.. How did you hook
up with him?
Salvatore Principatao is the percussionist and singer of the legendary
NYC based band Liquid Liquid. He can be seen as one of the founders
and inventors of the so-called punk-funk sound that is quite popular
now. Bands like The Rapture or LCD Soundsystem are immensely influenced

Liquid Liquid. Songs such
as Cavern, Scraper & Optimo played a crucial role in dance music
in the past decades. The first time we met was in NYC. Both of us
were booked for MOMA’s PS1 Warm Up Sessions. We instantly realized
that we were up the same alley music-wise. More shows together followed
and both of us ended up producing the track “Cerebral Tremolo”
which is released on Kitsune & Rong. We received such great feedback
on that 12” that a mutual friend asked us if we were up for
doing a mix together. Well, “Danse, Gravite Zero” is the
result.
Your compilation is set into context with Cosmic
music – could you quickly explain the roots of this sound and
its influences?
Cosmic music was founded at legendary Italian clubs like Cosmic or
Typhoon, all based around the Lago Di Garda. The most influential
DJs were Danielle Baldelli, Mozart DJ & Beppe Loda. It took place
in between 1979 and 1984 and can best be described as being a blend
of Afro, Disco, and electronic sounds. A very common thing was to
play records on 33 instead of 45 and vice versa. It is a very slow
(in between 90 – 115 bpm) and hypnotizing sound. The sound was
very much influenced by drugs, especially LSD and Heroin. |
