Was there a particular reason for those
destinations? Where you trying to create a certain vibe, as it's a
darker sounding album.
Not really, I wanted to work with Chris Goss,
and he's made a lot of albums in the desert, particularly Joshua tree.
Many albums I have been into over the last four years have been recorded
there.
Like whom?
Desert Sessions, Queens Of The Stone Age, things
like that.
Which leads onto my next question, Josh Homme
featured on 'Never, Never, Land', what's the story with him appearing
so much on War Stories?
We became friends over that period of time,
and when we were in LA he'd pass by the studio and just get involved
really.
What sort of musical influences were you listening
to prior to this album, because it's a definite shift in sound, it
reminds me a lot of that snarling garage sound on Death in Vegas'
'The Contino Sessions'.
I was listening to Queens, Mark Lanegan, Masters
of Reality, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Check Your Head, people like that.
One of the standout records on the album is
'Hold My Hand', which you wrote and sang on. Most great records come
from life experience, could you tell us where 'Hold My Hand' came
from?
It's about lost relationships and drugs really...
and where you're at in your life - having a good look at yourself.
And making decisions when you are under the
influence, that in the cold light of day are regretful?
Yeah, but it's about being lonely also...
Well you certainly get all those messages in
the lyrics that make you think about yourself. You seem to have an
established team in Will Bankhead, Ben Drury, Richard File and Pablo.
Is Pablo a full-time UNKLE member now?
Yeah I have a studio with Pablo now called 'Surrender
Sounds', and he was involved with finishing off the London part of
the record. |
