BGHD: Hi James, great to see you again,
has it been about four years since Never, Never Land was released?
James: Yes it was about that long I suppose.
How come there was such a long break considering
the album was so well received?
Well, you have to put the album out and then
tour it. Then we left Island Records, so we had to get a release
for the rest of the world, which we ended up doing with Global in
America. And then I set up the new label, so had to do all that.
That leads me onto another question your label
Surrender-All, could you tell us about it?
Basically it's a new label, which I own with
a new partner called Robert Bevan, and it's a way I can put out music,
creatively, where I've got control y'know.
Almost like going back to your roots with
Mo Wax, where you were used to having that control - getting signed
to a major label did you lose some of that?
Yeah, yeah totally, I've done so many things
with so many people, and so many different labels, I just want to
be in a situation where I have control over everything. I just think
with the kind of records that we make it's really important as they're
not pop records. They tend to be quite slow burning records, and
you need as much support as you can, so if you have people with a
similar vision, and you're trying to achieve the same thing, then
you have a much better chance of achieving success...
You must get pulled in lots of directions
with a major, but Island is one of the more 'laid-back' labels aren't
they?
They're all the same really! The problem is
you have labels that exist as their own entity in different countries,
and if say Island Spain do not like your record then you are fucked
over there. Being able to work with people who are into your music
in each country, means that they are behind you 100%, which is a
lot better.
The new album (War Stories), was recorded
out in the desert somewhere in America, could you tell us a bit more
about that?
Yeah it was done in LA and Joshua tree, and
then in London. |
