Tokyo, Japan
Is it possible to design and produce quality clothing at a reasonable price? Looking at brands such as The Gap or even Land's End (they do stock a number of good shirts, down jackets and parkas!) there is potential. Due to their high production numbers these companies can even work with the latest high-tech materials and fabrics while keeping prices low.
However, all of these brands seem to be missing the details. Often, the cut of the pieces is too generic, the color-choices are too bland, the overall look is just not concise. But then that's why these brands are so succesful, they cater to 'everybody'.
Base Station, a new brand and retail space in Tokyo, sets out to offer a selection of basic styles with a more distinct approach towards design, at a very fair price. With the help and cooperation with Fragment, Neighborhood, etc., we are sure that they will be very succesful with it. Just looking at the current line there are some excellent pieces - this time even for women, children and, yes, dogs, too!
Unfortunately, Base Station is only operating in Japan for now. So for the rest of us, we'll always have to add the cost of a flight ticket and hotel to the 'fair prices'. It's a good start, though and hopefully there will be more Base Stations around the world soon.
