StÜssy & Nike // World Tour...
Who was involved in this project and how long did it take from first draft
to finished product?
I took about a year. I worked with Jesse
Leyva, Fraser Cooke, Christian Parkes, and Adam Wiessman.
What were your thoughts/ideas behind picking these three models -
one vintage and two newly developed ones?
For Stüssy old and new are our inspirations.
I think these three models reflect Stüssy's philosophy.
The design on the sneakers and the color-schemes
pay hommage to the four "style capitals" Los Angeles, New
York, London and Tokyo. How did you come up with the different color-versions
for each city.
LA was black, it is just the color of shoes I
see the most in LA. NYC was olive - kind of military, Taxi Driver.
London was basic mens shoes, a good pair or brown brogues. And for
Tokyo white just seemed fresh.
For the project it was very important to make
wearable shoes. I am not into goofy colored shoes. I think shoes should
be worn and not wear you. All these crazy colors just don't do it
for me.
As well I think the colorway game has made sneakers more collectable
and less wearable. And that seems to be catching up.
A good black shoe you can wear forever. A pink, lime, aqua and red
shoe just does not get a whole lot of play in my closet. |

What characteristics would you/could you attribute
to these cities?
These cities are inspiring, because of the subtle
histories and nuances. These shoes are simple at fist but have lots
to see on closer inspection.
Just like the cities that have all or nothing to offer, it's how you
approch them.
Describe Stüssy's history in terms of
sneakers. What did people wear 'back in the days' - what models are
they wearing now / what matches Stüssy best?
Back in the day circa '85 or so
I wore lots of Dunks and Chucks. Other headz ran mad different kicks
it was very personal back then. Now it's a new world, anything goes.
I like early Jordans (six and before), Dunk Hi, AF1 lo, Black chucks,
Sk8 Hi's, Era's and Visvim. As well the 360 collection that just dropped
was dope. And it might me time to bust out some Wallabees....
With all of the prior Stüssy x Nike
models being such huge successes, do you ever feel pressure to outdo
the last one...? Yes you have
to make good stuff. The game has changed a colorway just does not
cut it anymore. Now the pressure is on, kicks have to be next level.
Who did you / do you show the designs
to - to get feedback?
The only people that saw the shoes were
us four. We wanted to work in a clandestine process and see the results.
It was a good experience and exercise in design, how two companies
can work together and share a creative endeavor. Stüssy and Nike
worked very well together. |
