Stüssy UK & Nike Past / Present / Future Finale
How much were you involved with the process of the design of the sneakers - and when did you enter this project?

We weren't involved at all in the design of the sports shoes. I think Leon brought us in to help make it particular to the London Stüssy shop. We agreed to participate because of him. Neither Russell nor I have any interest in the special-edition-trainers-as-culture phenomenon that seems to be all the rage.

Personally, I find it a bit depressing the way independent, underground grassroots culture has allowed itself to be co-opted to such an extent by enormous corporations. I would love it if Nike sponsored me to run marathons, but I have zero interest in choosing some colours for one of their shoes...

Maybe I am just upset because it seems Nike+ don't have a shoe for over-pronators. I think it is quite funny that people are thinking of starting running as a lifestyle statement. Its actually quite knackering.

If you could travel back in time - which period would you choose in regards to art? Which artist would you like to meet in person?

For an artistic period it would either be revolutionary Russia and Constructivism or Weimar Germany and the Bauhaus. I find both movements incredibly inspiring. Which artists? El Lissitsky, Rodchenko, Tatlin, Mayakovski, Klee, Moholy-Nagy. But I think I would feel depressed and inadequate in such company.

What is on your to-do list for the next seven days?

Preliminary drawings for the next Vortigern's Machine book. Interval training.

What would be your 'dream' project?

World of Pain movie.

What are your pastime activities - don't say art now?

Running, eating, arguing.

Where do you go/would you like to go to either find inspiration for your work or get totally away from everything...

To get inspiration, you can't get away from 'everything'. 'Everything' is the inspiration. Sometimes you need a bit of distance from your work to be able to understand exactly what you should or shouldn't be doing.

What are your most beloved items?

I don't really covet 'things' in a fetishist way. I love the content, not the object. But here are some things I like: Captain Haddock, Conan the Barbarian, The Barcelona Pavillion by Mies van der Rohe.

Any comments/shouts/hints...?

I don't like shouting, but I would like to respectfully thank everyone I know for putting up with me, and apologise unreservedly for anything untoward I may have said or done whilst intoxicated. And I'm sorry I never ring anyone up.
