Work

How did you start out your designwork in the Big Apple?

I started working in the SSUR office with Kevin and Russ while I was still in school. Then I dropped out and took my first job designing for Supreme when I was 20.

As a designer one heavily relies on personal relationships in order to get jobs. Who was your 'connector'?

I was assisting Kevin while I was at school so the relationship with SSUR kind of happened naturally through that. At the same time KAWS knew the stuff I was working on and introduced me to James Jebbia and that is how that whole chapter started.

You are designing for companies such as SSUR, aNYthing, and mentioned Supreme. What are the differences in working for each of these companies?

I think all of them have a unique way of approaching things. Even though they all come out of the same city and are selling to similar audiences they are trying to do different things and all have different themes going on within the companies. 80% of the stuff from each brand would look out of place in the other brand. I think you have to know what works for whom.

How do you guys set out to put together a collection for Supreme?

Supreme collections (graphically) happened more organically. It is more about balance in the line then conveying a certain theme. I think Supreme itself is a theme and has become a mixture of so many aspects of New York that drawing from that is what keeps everything relevant.

How much of the hype that surrounds the brands that you work for gets through to you?

You hear about things but in the end it is a business and these are still jobs. You still have to work hard and get the job done. I think from the outside it seems more glamorous then it really is. Probably anyone in the clothing game will tell you that.

You started Adorn, your own graphic design project, back when you were still living in California - how did Adorn change from your days there to being in NYC?

Adorn started right when I was moving to New York. It has kind of just become an AKA of sorts. Really just an umbrella to do another aspect of work under. It gives me an excuse to do random stuff without having to tie it into something else. I use it from time to time and from project to project. Switching back and for between Eric Elms and Eric Adorn. Just another way to mix things up. It became a part of my work in a way after all this time. Sometimes it is nice to have a little separation between two different styles.

How would you say does Adorn differ from all the other projects that you are working on?

A lof of times they don't. Sometimes it is something that doesn't necessarily fit in with anything/anyone that I am working for at the time. Other times it really is personal work or something I'm experimenting with at home.

You were part of the now legendary SK8 on the wall art show at Rocket gallery in Tokyo. How did that come about?

I got introduced to Taka Kawachi, who was the curator for the show, and he invited me to do some pieces for it.
