Work

Why did you leave the show?
I left only because the show folded. I would have been happy to stay and develop my own work on the side

You started working freelance after. How do you organize your own work?
I have a big pile of scrap paper in my studio with ideas for characters. Quite often when I’m working on one character an idea for another will come up, and I make a rough sketch of it. I’ve got a massive backlog of things I want to do. So far I have never felt short of ideas for a new piece. I don’t set myself deadlines. Sometimes it’s difficult to know when something is ‘finished’, but a general feeling of fidgety impatience usually indicates that it’s time to wrap up this one and start something new.

Do you follow a certain scheme when setting out with a new idea?
It pretty much just happens. Usually I have two or three figures that I work on at once. I find it useful to go from one to the other, coming fresh to the subject each time. Also its good to just have a glance at a character in progress even when I’m not working on it, coming home in the evening drunk – sometimes you suddenly see that the legs are too long or a head too small – you don’t notice these things unless the figure takes you ‘by surprise’.
