Bicycles. Hawk Classic
Unless you are a professional cyclist, buying a new bike is not a
common matter. With 'new' we mean not just 'another one' after the
'other one' got stolen, but a brand new bike. One that you'll spend
your own money on, which won't be a gift from your parents. Similar
to a car, this purchase might stick with you for a long time. It
will have to correspond with the numerous acitivities that you'll
use it for - whether it'd be for bringing your groceries home, or
that long tour through France, or just for dashing through the city.
It is an important decision...
Ever since the mountainbike appeared there really haven't been any
groundbreaking designs on the market. There are more gears and hydraulics,
everything is anti-shock, but apart from the gimmickry the general
appearance hasn't changed in over 20 years. Alternatives? Cruisers,
Lowriders? If you can't afford the motorized joints and want to stay
home and not go to France... maybe. For the rest, Hawk Classic is
what we recommend. These bikes take inspiration from vintage motorcycles
but not the show-off ones but the sleeker models; those that you'd
race with, the quick and agile ones. Fitted with quality mountings
and gears, Hawks Classic bikes not only look remarkable and fresh,
they are also technically up-to-date. We'll stick with those bikes
for a long time - literally, as they might get stolen if you leave
them on their own someplace...

Gravis.
Black Box, Jono Wood
At Modart in Munich you could have seen Jono Wood live and in full
effect. The pieces that are now part of the Black Box series by Gravis
seem like they were already on display there? No matter what, Jono's
work has inspired Gravis not only to produce a ltd. edition t-shirt
design but a whole range of items - all in black and white. With
this Black Box edition, Gravis also decided to apply exclusive materials
to a limited line of already progressive shoes, bags and gear. Black
and white carries on to become the color scheme for the summer...

TAS.
UNDFTD "Strawberry Shortcakes"
There is no stopping UNDFTD these days. Just after they hit us with
the HF collaboration jerseys, they are dropping another item that
is the result of working with a Japanese label. This time it's TAS
- member of the Tokyo footwear clan (Ubiq, Madfoot, Visvim, etc.)
- with a shoe that UNDFTD likes to call the "Strawberry Shortcake".
Look at the colors and you know why. The materials on that shoe are
exceptional. 90 of the shortcakes will be for sale on May 28th, at
UNDFTD's L.A. store (only). If you're not happy with rosé/beige,
check Fixins for the other colorway that will go on sale June 4th.

Compound Gallery: Katsuya Terada
We've been a bit quiet on the products' side for a few days - seems
that not too much exciting going on at the moment. Some tees here
and there, a shoe promo that keeps kids running, and so forth. With
events, however, we cannot say that there have been too few of them,
lately. At the beginning of May, Katsuya Terada opened his first
ever artshow in the US at Compound Gallery in Portland. You heard
of it, now see some of it...

HK & SG.
Toys Metropolis, IdN Conference
The busy bees at lmac.tv covered some milage over a period of only
a few days. Together with James Jarvis they were guests at the launch
for the premier issue of "Toys Metropolis - Transculture Monthly".
After the unveiling of the cover artwork, lmac.tv's own le messie
took to the stage for his live performance (a warm 'thank you' goes
to the hosts at Flying Cat). From HK, lmac.tv headed for SG as the
official act for the IdN closing party. Many big players attended:
James Jarvis, Brothersfree, Work In Progress, Mother, Devil Robots,
Delaware, etc. etc. (Laurence of IdN made it possible - 'thanks'
to him, too). Here are pics of the events...

Event.
Beastie Boys in Amsterdam
The Beastie Boys are traveling the world to promote their new album "To
the 5 Boroughs". It's more of an inofficial promo tour, so getting
in depends on your connections or sheer luck. This last Sunday they
rocked Amsterdam and here is a short first-hand account:
Mix Master Mic started the 45 minute show on the 1's & 2's. With
the first tunes of "Intergalactic", the insane threesome
burst onto the stage. Even though Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D are in
their late 30's they are still moving 'like they just don't care'.
While Ad Rock seemed to be the most busy of the NYC trio, MCA was
moving slowly (probably as a result from a visit to a Dutch greenhouse...)
but his voice was as raw as ever. Besides the new material, they
also played loads of old classics like "So what'cha want" or "Skills
to pay the bills". Seeing the Beastie Boys perform in your hometown
in front of a small audience is like a dream come true! These guys
rocked for years and by the looks of it they'll rock for many more
years to come.
The Beastie Boys will be on an official tour through Europe (and
the rest of the globe) this summer. In the meantime check their site
for updates and merchandise (BGHD related imagery on those tees...).

Printed
Matter. Relax #88
Relax #88 will set you in the mood for summer with a subject that
you would have never expected to be a subject in the first place
- flip flops. Relax have sent out their scouts to bring you the history
of this sandal. They will introduce you to the very first beach sandals
by Pastene and the most famous of brands regarding flip flops, havaianas
of Brazil. Whether you like them or not, this feature is a great
piece and it tells us that even the most common things can have a
very colorful history.

Recap
Over the past two weeks a couple of events took place that we'd like
to take a look at in retrospect. We had shown you the flyer for the
UNDFTD & KAWS billboard back in April so here are some pictures
of that event that will show you how busy Mr. KAWS was sigining all
those goodies. Last week saw Nike's "Art of Speed" presentation
in Rome. Sartoria made sure that the proper surroundings were set
up to show those 15 clips by digital artists from around the globe.
offtrack was host to Mat. and his canvasses at the K&K club in
Munich. All pieces were/are for sale. If interested, email us for
more info.

UNDFTD & Head
Porter Plus. Football Jerseys
Still not all set with your wardrobe for summer? Consider the new
UNDFTD & Head Porter Plus Football Jerseys that were designed
by Hiroshi Fujiwara himself. It's nice to see how an obviously very
simple shape can be modified and altered to become somthing refreshingly
new. Please note the subtle detailing on the chest. Great for the
warmer season and an excellent alternative to the regular tee.

Mat. at K&K club
Offtrack is an online radioshow that has been running for six years
now with an enthusiastic following. From May on, Dirk Rumpff - the
originator of offtrack - has decided to take his concept from the
digital to the physical. K&K club in Munich is the host for a
series of events that will incorporate many different facettes of
popular (club) culture. This coming Thursday, offtrack will bring
Mat. (Proud 2bea Flyer) from Italia to Bavaria for a showcase of
his work. Saturday will see the big party for the event.

Russel
Maurice. Maison Verte at Churchill
Gallery/Maharishi
Russel Maurice - aka The Gasface - will show a series of new works
on canvas as well as installations of painted cardboard boxes, juice
cartons or foam packaging. Nature and environmental issues are the
influences for these new pieces, subjects that were also to be found
in Russel's earlier works. If you ever wondered why the place is
called "Churchill Gallery": it hosted Winston Churchill's
art collection during WWII. From there led a network of tunnels -
one apparently straight to Downing Street...

Art/Sculpture.
Björn Berglund
R2 made us aware of Björn Berglund who might cause a few jaws
to drop with his sculptures. We call them that because the figures
are truely pieces of art - not only for their manga-inspired designs
but also because of the craftsmanship involved in their production.
While many toy artists are working with artificial materials - vinyl,
resin, pvc - Björn Berglund has taken a different road with
his creatures... And this road must have led him through a forest
as he chose to sculpt the components of his figures out of balsa
wood. This material has long been used for model making and looking
at Björn's "models" you can see that it works not
only for planes or cars but most definitely also for manga-style
mechas.
One might argue that it could be an easy game - taking manga, using
its aesthetics and presenting it as a new artistic achievement, while
the most important part - the actual design - was carried out by
others. Yes, one just might say that but one shouldn't. As mentioned
above, it truely is the combination of the known manga styles - which
Björn enhances & advances - with this traditional material
and his craftsmanship that makes his robots unique and valuable as
sculptures.

Retail.
90sqm
On our quest to cover the best retail spaces we left our office to
visit 90sqm in Amsterdam to get a first-hand impression of this store
that has been on our radar for some time now. Even though the city
center has a lot of flair with its "Grachten", bridges,
and medievial buildings, it's also immensly crowded and hectic. In
our eyes, not the perfect setup for a laid-back shopping experience...
You will find 90sqm about 10-15 minutes (by bus or bike) to the west
of the center on KNSM island. This area, which has been developing
over the past 10 years, is mostly a residential area - thus far from
the usual shopping madness. Making your way out there gets you in
a/the mood and when stepping into the store you'll feel the difference.
Every shop has a certain character which is conveyed by its location,
its interior, its merchandise and its staff. With 90sqm you will
instantly get the impression of a very warm welcome. There is no
pressure, no bad feeling of 'being watched' or 'being followed around'.
You can take your time to explore every corner and you will need
it, too. There is plenty to look at and to try on: +41, MHI, Grapeyard,
and all sorts of ltd. edition sneakers, books, or magazines (Relax).
From this week on you'll find some special treats by Delta, Mode2,
and Futura installed in the store - keyword is 'soccer'.
